Construction

New Adventure Primary School

Currently our most pressing project is the construction of a new building to house our primary school. AIM is renting the existing school building from a local church. Its structure consists of dirt walls and floors creating a muddy mess when it rains.  Another major problem is the lack of available space. Some of the smaller classrooms house up to 50 students causing overcrowded rooms. Five of the classes simply meet in the main hall, competing to be heard amidst the noise. Conditions like these make it difficult to learn and make effective teaching nearly impossible.

The new structure would be built out of corrugated iron sheets and would have a concrete foundation, erradicating some of the problems that the rainy season brings. Separate classrooms for each standard would lessen the noise level and make it easier for students and teachers alike to concentrate on their lessons. Also the school will be at a new location, where we are already renting classroom space, making it unneccesary to share the building with another organization.

Desks

After the new primary school building has been completed there will be room in each classroom for new desks. Right now students have been using old, wooden desks that are falling apart. Because of overcrowding, plank-style desks built for 3 often have 5 students clustered around them Some students have even been sitting on rocks and using their laps as a desk top. Several local carpenters have already been priced for this project and we are excited about being able to provide improved work places for the students. Each desk costs $32.

New Adventure Secondary School

Because secondary schooling is not free to the public, students are hindered from continuing with their education after receiving their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE). In response to this need, we at NAS want to begin an expansion project to include a secondary school making it easier to follow up with the primary students' education. Before we can even begin building funding to either buy or rent land must be raised.
