NAS Overview
NAS Main Hall | New Adventure School (NAS) was established by a local pastor in response to the need for quality, affordable education for the children of Kibera. Adventures in Missions (AIM) took on the challenge of financing and helping manage NAS alongside the Kenyan staff. The school has been expanding since its inception in 2003 and now includes over 400 students in standards (grades) 1-8 completing the primary school. |
NAS is located in a rented church building. It has been a blessing to have a home, but the challenge of teaching 5 different grades in the main room is growing more difficult with increased attendance. The upper grades (standards 6-8) are located a short walk from the main hall. Recently we have begun renting additional space next to these 3 classrooms. Within 2 years we expect completion of the construction of a two story classroom building with separate rooms for each class, adequate lighting and desks.
In our employ are 10 full time staff members, including teachers for each standard, a headmaster and a project manager. Also working with the school are 5 part time volunteers who fill such positions as cook, custodian and security. All are committed believers who have professed faith in Jesus Christ. They are members of a local church and are respected within their community. All of the teachers has the schooling and training necessary to be nationally certified. | NAS Teachers and Staff |
The students receive instruction in 7 subject areas:

There is an added section of the curriculum addressing HIV/AIDS that is taught once a week. Each school year consists of 3 terms (January-March, May-July, and September-November). The students are tested at the end of each term to evaluate additional needs and progress.
At the end of standard 8 the students are required to take the highly competitive national Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examination (KCPE) before being allowed to continue on to secondary education. NAS does not currently provide secondary schooling. Therefore the students are directed to other schools in the nearby area. |
